Kovac: Dortmund approaching every game like it is Champions League

Niko Kovac has demanded Borussia Dortmund their remaining Bundesliga game as a Champions League match, while they want to book their place in the top competition of Europe.

Dortmund gathered on Sunday to a 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, and made sure that Xabi Alonso did not enjoy a final victory in the Bayarena before he left at the end of the season.

Julian Brandt, Julian Ryerson, Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy all scored for Dortmund, with their goals sandwiched between the opener of Jeremie Frimpong and Jonas Hofmann's stop time consolation.

Dortmund is now on an undefeated line of seven games in the top flight (W6 D1) and each of their last four-way runs wins his club test in 2024-25.

During that run they gathered a competition-high 19 points, and their current position of the fifth is their highest since MatchDay 13.

With just one game to play, against the relegated Holstein Kiel, Dortmund is one point behind Freiburg in fourth place. They are confronted with Eintracht Frankfurt, who also have to confirm their place in the Champions League in the Champions League on the last day.

The black and yellow get a chance of 77.4% to achieve a place in the top four by the OPTA Supercomputer, with the hope of Freiburg at 47.9%.

Kovac was happy with how effective his team was against Leverkusen and insisted that they would keep the pressure.

“Top teams don't need many opportunities, and top players score goals if they get opportunities,” he said.

“I demand that we approach every game as if it is a Champions League match.”

Dortmund only had five shots on goal against Leverkusen, four of them scored, while their hosts generally had 22 opportunities, worth 2.2 expected goals (XG), with 10 on goal. They also touch the woodwork.

Gregor Kobel made eight Saves and had a clear start of the game when he kept Dortmund in the game under the increasing pressure of Leverkusen.

“We saw a super game in difficult circumstances. Gregor [Kobel] Kept us in the game in the first half. We did better in the second half, “Kovac told Dazn.

“The switch from 5-4-1 to 5-3-2 in the first half was already an improvement. And when Sabitzer came up, we showed more calmness and checked the game.”
