Manchester City defender Kyle Walker has called for more action to prevent online abuse after revealing a “mean, racist and threatening” message he received following Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at Juventus.
Walker played the entire match in Turin, but could not help Pep Guardiola's side avoid a seventh defeat in ten games.
England international Walker posted a screenshot of a message he received on Instagram from an unnamed user to his social media accounts on Thursday, writing: “Bro you can just wander around and die you stupid bastard *****. “
“No one should ever be subjected to the type of vile, racist and threatening abuse I have received online since last night's match,” Walker wrote on his X and Instagram accounts.
“Instagram and the authorities must prevent this for the sake of everyone who suffers this abuse. It is never acceptable.
“To our fans, we will continue to work as a team to do better, improve and come around the corner together.”
City quickly condemned the racist attack. A club statement said: “Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse Kyle Walker was subjected to online following last night's match.
“We refuse to tolerate any form of discrimination, whether in stadiums or online.
“We will offer Kyle our full support following the disgusting treatment he has suffered.”
