La Liga has welcomed the decision of a Catalan court to reject Barcelona's appeal against Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, who were banned from playing for the club after January 1.
Spanish midfielder Olmo, a key part of the European Championship-winning team, signed for around £51 million from RB Leipzig last summer, but because Barcelona could not stay under the league's wage cap he was only allowed to play for the first four months . of the campaign. Victor, 23, was in the same boat.
That was because Barcelona moved a number of salaries while players were injured at the start of the season. But Olmo will be banned from lining up from January 1 after Barcelona's commercial court rejected the club's appeal.
And La Liga said on Friday: “LaLiga today took note of the ruling… rejecting Dani Olmo's request for provisional registration until June 30, 2025, on the grounds that none of the necessary conditions for the adoption of a provisional measure have been fulfilled.
The ruling also emphasizes that: 'The purpose of allowing additional expenditure is to ensure that a long-term injury does not weaken the competitive position of the team, and not to use a long-term injury to enable the registration of players whose salary exceeds the limit, which is what FC Barcelona is trying to do.”
Barcelona have one remaining appeal, to a magistrates' court, and that is expected to be heard on Monday – one day before the deadline for registering squads for the remainder of the domestic campaign.
Olmo, 26, has been a good player for Barcelona, who sit third at the halfway point in the table and three points behind leaders Real. Despite making just seven starts, he scored five goals and also found the net once in the Champions League.
But he could now move to another club for nothing in the January transfer window as he will become a free agent if the club cannot sign him.
