Coventry manager Frank Lampard insists that their play-off from the championship with Sunderland is still there for the taking, while trying to destroy a shortage on the first leg and keep their promotion hopes alive.
The Black Cats jerked a 2-1 win in the Coventry Building Society Arena after the winner of Eliezer Mayenda two minutes than time.
Lampard now hopes that Coventry can turn the semi -final into the collision of the second leg in the Stadium of Het Licht in Tuesday.
He said: “We know exactly what it is, this was always a two -legged draw, the game is still there.
“We have a great stimulus to try to turn it around, turn the result and leave everything on the field.”
Lampard wants to draw from previous positive experiences of two -legged encounters.
The former Chelsea midfielder played in an exciting Champions League quarter final against Liverpool, where the blues a 3-1 lead in the second stage at Stamford Bridge, but had to fight to earn a 4-4 draw and win 7-5.
In 2019, Lampard's Derby lost 1-0 to their play-off first stage, but he sent the rams to a memorable victory when a stunning comeback saw them claim a 4-3 aggregated victory.
He added: “I think I have been to football long enough, regardless of the derby game to know that it was never done until it is done in both ways.
“I remember that I was 3-1 in a Champions League match against Liverpool and they scored two to go 3-3 on Stamford Bridge. That was in about half an hour, the game changed completely.
“At Derby when we went to Leeds, we went down 2-0 [on aggregate in the second leg]Because we had been 1-0. There are too many things to talk about, so the game is still there. “
Story of the first leg
The first stage on Friday saw Wilson Isidor breaking the impasse in the 68th minute before Jack Rudoni gave an immediate response.
Although Coventry has placed a solid display, Mayenda then felt late for the visitors and Lampard admitted that his side should stay careful with the threats of Sunderland.
“I think we should take some confidence of that, but it's a game that is now gone,” he said. “When you play each other with such a tight turn and understand that we have checked a lot of the game. Did we have enough intention at the top of the field? Sometimes not that much.
“It is better to think about the game in a different way. Especially with a team like Sunderland, they are a very good team at this level and we have to expect the game to look different.
“It is a balanced approach, we know that we have played reasonably well, we know we can do better, but we have to be on their care about what Sunderland pops up and the individuals they have, who remain the same individuals who can hurt you any time.
“We are well prepared for the game, the players are in a good place. We will be ready to give everything.”
'Pre -playoff fears for Sunderland – they are now strong favorites'
Sky Sports EFL -Editor Simeon Gholam:
“All the talk before the first stage was about what State would be in the draw.
“They had been fourth in the table for so long, with months of essentially nothing to play for, that momentum had been suppressed.
“Everything that was blown out of the window in a dedicated, astute representation in the CBS Arena on Friday evening. The winner may have been created a piece of fortune, but the game plan was perfect by Regis Le Bris.
“Now they will stand in front of a full house in the stadium of Light, with their destination in their own hands. Whether they can get away with playing in the same way as the first leg, but with the players they have at their disposal – especially Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda – it makes sense to sit in and play on the counterattack.
“Le Bris is not someone who is afraid or to leave his methods or beliefs, even for a full house of noisy home fans who want to see an attack.” We will play with the same mentality, “he said after the first stage.
“That can at least give Lampard and Coventry an idea of where they are against. It is by no means about anyway, but Sunderland are tough favorites here.”
