Landslide vote for Barcelona’s record-breaking $1.8 billion deal

The LaLiga giants have put pen to paper on a new 14-year deal with Nike to continue as a kit manufacturer.

An overwhelming vote at an Extraordinary General Meeting of Barcelona members has led to a record-breaking kit production deal with Nike.

The American sportswear brand has produced Barcelona's iconic jerseys since 1998, but there was some suggestion the relationship could end soon, with Barcelona looking to maximize revenue streams. However, Nike ultimately agreed to a massive $1.8 billion, fourteen-year deal that surpasses any other of its kind.

The General Assembly took place on Saturday, December 21, and Barcelona members voted 419 to 27 in favor of ratifying the agreement. Club president Joan Laporta announced the news in a speech later in the day.

“We are strong, convinced and determined to complete the recovery of the club in every possible way. And this agreement is in line with this because it helps this economic recovery enormously, and also confirms the recovery. Barça has returned to the top of the world with this agreement,” said Laporta.

How much is Barcelona's Nike deal worth?

Laporta then described the new deal as a “quantitative and qualitative leap” for Barcelona, adding that the board had considered “the current and medium term” as well as more distant objectives. It represents a significant increase compared to the previous deal.

Barcelona's previous Nike deal was worth $112 million per year and expired in June 2028. Barça had considered switching manufacturers or even creating their own kit, but were tempted by an improved Nike offering.

The enhanced 14-year deal would run until 2038 and is worth significantly more to the club. There is a $169 million signing bonus, paid over the life of the deal, and enhanced annual payments.

SportsPro reports that Barcelona will earn $132 million a year from Nike, surpassing all other manufacturing deals in football. That figure exceeds the $105 million that Manchester United receives from Adidas and even exceeds the $120 million that Adidas pays to Real Madrid.
