Lazio 0-6 Inter: Nerazzurri run riot at Stadio Olimpico

Defending Serie A champions Inter stormed to a 6-0 win at Lazio on Monday and sent a statement of their Scudetto intentions.

The Nerazzurri had to survive early pressure from Lazio as Tijjani Noslin twice went close for the hosts, but they did not look back after taking the lead in the 41st minute in bizarre circumstances.

Stefan de Vrij initially saw a close-range finish disallowed due to a mistake by Denzel Dumfries during a goal, but when referee Daniele Chiffi was sent to the monitor for an on-pitch VAR review, he instead penalized Samuel Gigot for handball and awarded him an Inter. penalty, which Hakan Calhanoglu converted.

Four minutes later, Inter doubled their lead through Federico Dimarco, who beat Ivan Provedel on the volley from a Dumfries cross.

The Nerazzurri then scored nil after half-time as Simone Inzaghi inflicted a crushing defeat on his old club. Nicolo Barella made it 3-0 six minutes after the restart before Dumfries headed in a fourth two minutes later.

Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram completed the rout late in the afternoon, with the former showing great footwork in a crowded area to head home, before the latter secured his finish inside the near post.

Inter remain third in the standings with 34 points from fifteen games, but are now just three points behind leaders Atalanta with a game in hand. Lazio are fifth on 31 from 16 games.

Data debrief: historic defeat for Biancocelesti

Monday's defeat was the first Lazio have ever suffered at home in Serie A by six goals, while Inter have now scored 47 times on their travels in the Italian top flight in 2024.

That's a new club record for away goals scored by the Nerazzurri in a single calendar year.

They last scored six times in a league match in May 2023, when they defeated Hellas Verona on their travels by the same scoreline.
