League Two clash delayed 56 MINUTES with game suspended

The League Two match between Swindon Town and Crewe Alexandra was postponed by 56 minutes after referees determined conditions were unplayable just four minutes into the match.

The affair initially started at 3pm GMT, before referee Lee Swaby paused the match shortly afterwards, as a thick layer of fog descended on the County Ground.

Players quickly entered their changing rooms, while most supporters reportedly remained in the ground waiting for the match to restart.

Conditions improved and were re-evaluated at 3:30 PM, before the managers returned to the touchline and it was announced that play would resume at 4:00 PM.

Swindon manager Ian Holloway revealed that if the fog worsens or returns to the original state it was in when the game was first called off, the match will likely be cancelled.

“If it goes like this again we will have to cancel, it will be too dangerous,” he told BBC Radio Wiltshire before play resumed.

'It happened straight after kick-off. What it was like is very different from what it is now. Out of respect for everyone here, we're going to try it again.

'I haven't seen anything like that before [in my career]. Don't know. Is the mist attracted to the players' body heat?'

Just before the match restarted, former Swindon defender Paul Bodin revealed how treacherous the conditions were, but argued they were still playable.

He said: 'It's very, very difficult to play in these conditions.

'If you stand in the center of the field, you can now see both sides of the field.

'The linesman can look straight across the border. If it stays like this, it will definitely be playable.”

Saturday's match was one of only two League Two games to get underway today after freezing temperatures disrupted the schedule.

Eight matches were scheduled to be played, but no fewer than six were cancelled. These were: Grimsby Town versus Notts County; Gillingham vs Fleetwood; Carslile vs MK Dons; AFC Wimbledon vs Cheltenham; Port Vale vs Barrow; and Accrington Stanley versus Newport County.

The final match was moved as Accrington faced Liverpool in the FA Cup, where the Reds won 4–0 at Anfield.

The only other League Two match to go as planned was Walsall vs Tranmere earlier in the afternoon, with the hosts securing a 5-1 win at the Bescot Stadium.
