Arsenal striker Leandro Trossard has admitted his side will have to be perfect this season as they chase the Premier League title.
The Gunners are currently four points behind leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. Last time out, Arsenal recovered from a late setback at Brighton, where they were held to a 1-1 draw to beat their north London rivals Tottenham 2-0.
Liverpool, who sit in first place, are also still unable to claim a league win since the turn of the year, after back-to-back draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. However, Trossard believes the growing competitiveness of the league means Arsenal must remain at their best to remain competitive.
“You have to be perfect every season,” Trossard told Sky Sports.
âIt's been such a close race over the last four or five seasons. Everyone participates, it's not just the teams at the top of the table, everyone gets better every season and so it becomes more competitive.
âYou need to be with you [A] play every match day. It's difficult, but we just have to keep believing and being ourselves and then we can achieve something.”
Arsenal's efforts to win the title this season have not been helped by an ever-growing injury list in the forward line-up.
This week it was confirmed that Gabriel Jesus suffered a cruciate ligament injury and will join Bukayo Saka on the sidelines. Despite being absent from the attack, Trossard says he is ready to fill in if he is called upon.
“The injuries are a big blow for us. We know what Bukayo is [Saka] has shown for the club and Gabriel Jesus was doing well, those injuries are bad luck. We hope that we can be ready in the meantime. It's up to us to be ready.
“We had to change some things because of the injuries so that everyone gets their chance. Of course I'm always happy [to fill in up front]. I am always ready to play in any position on the field.”
Arsenal have retained the threat of set pieces and are in their own right the team that uses corners most effectively. Their corner-taking skills have led to some criticism from onlookers who suggest the Gunners are too reliant on set-pieces. For Trossard, Arsenal is more than just set pieces.
âIt's a part of our game that we're very good at,â he told Sky Sports.
âWe want to be the best at everything, and that includes set pieces. We have shown consistency in recent years and it is the place where you can decide games. It is a big part of our game, but it is not the only part .
“We can also score from open play. I don't think there has been too much reliance on corners. The position from outside will be like that because we have scored a lot, but it is not in our minds to say that we can only score.â score from set pieces. It's just an extra tool for us to win a game.
“I think everyone in the league would want this. We are very happy with this. Obviously we can score more, but at the end of the day you have to be happy when you get wins in the Premier League.”
