The Premier League title parade of Liverpool fell on Monday in a tragic and deeply disturbing scene, while parties in the city were marred by a massive vehicle attack on fans in Merseyside. What had started when a moment of unbridled joy for the supporters of the club ended in horror, which caused a wave of reactions – including NBA legend LeBron James.
James, a stakeholder of minorities in Liverpool due to his involvement with Fenway Sports Group, expressed his horror shortly after the incident. The 40-year-old Lakers-star posted on his official X account:
“OMG !!!! Wth. My deepest thoughts and prayers go to everyone who has been hit today @LFC Premiere League Trophy Parade! Such a meaningless act! #Ynwa” ending with a broken heart emoji.
Images of the scene showed a driver who plowed in a crowd of Reds -fans before he was stopped by the surrounding audience a short distance away.
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher also went to X to share his feelings and wrote: “Destroying end of the day … Just pray that everyone is in order.”
Support messages quickly came from all over the football world-inclusive from old rivals. Everton posted: “Our thoughts are for everyone who is affected by this serious incident in our city.” In the meantime, Manchester United wrote: “Our thoughts are at @LFC and the city of Liverpool after today's terrible incident.”
What was meant as a day of unfiltered celebration turned into a scene of panic and need. After the trophy presentation on the weekend that Liverpool champions of the 2024–25 season crowned, thousands filled the streets on Monday to honor the players. Jürgen Klopp appeared alongside club legend Kenny Dalglish from one of the nearby buildings, a symbolic farewell in what a day should have remembered.
Instead, the day ended in trauma. Authorities have started a full investigation into the attack that has attracted international attention.
