Legendary coach Leo Beenhakker dead at 82: Real Madrid and Ajax lead tributes

Former Real Madrid, Ajax and Dutch manager Leo Beenhakker died at the age of 82.

Rotterdam-born his first Stint as Ajax boss between 1978 and 1981 saw him win the Eredivisie title, as he did again on his return to the Amsterdam club later in his career in 1990.

Beenhakker continued to accompany Real Madrid to three consecutive Leaga titles from 1986 and had a second Stint in the Bernabeu in 1992, and earned himself the nickname 'Don Leo' during his time in Spain.

“Real Madrid, his president and board of directors, is deeply saddened by the death of Leo Beenhakker, the legendary Real Madrid coach who led the whites between 1986 and 1989, and in 1992,” the Spanish giants said in a statement.

“Real Madrid would like to express their participation and affection to his family, clubs and loved ones.”

Ajax described Hakker as a 'coaching icon and a really unique figure' in the club.

An explanation from the Eredivisie side added: “Ajax expands the family sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Leo Beenhakker.”

Twice manager of the Dutch national team, Beenhakker led the Orange to the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where they lost in the last 16 of the final champions Germany.

The multi-judicial Dutch coach also had spells that are in charge of the Swiss club brothers, Mexican side club America, Istanbulspor in Turkey and the real Zaragoza of Spain, as well as a stint that was in charge of Saudi Arabia.

After he returned to his home country, Beenhakker Feyenoord led to the Eredivisie title in 1999 and then brought Trinidad & Tobago to a first world cup performance in 2006 for a four-year spell that was in charge of Poland, in which they qualified for Euro 2008.
