Leverkusen need a miracle to reach Champions League quarters, says Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso thinks his side needs a miracle to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League after losing 3-0 to Bayern Munich in the first stage of the Tour of 16.

The visitors had sent Nordi Mukiele in the second half, while they also gave a Harry Kane penalty in the 75th minute one night where everything went wrong for them.

“The second goal, the red card and the penalty, everything went in favor of Bayern. That's why we got this result,” Alonso told Dazn.

“We have to show an adult performance to better control that. The mistakes and details are important, but it is a bitter evening for us … One goal can make a big difference.

“We have seen that there are always big miracles in football and we now almost need one. But we will see … it's football, it's not the first time and there is still a match at home.”

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany meanwhile spent little time enjoying the victory on his part, apparently in an attempt to combat complacency with a trip to Leverkusen for the second stage that will be coming next week.

“It's the first half. We still have to come in the second game,” he said.

“There is zero percent thinking about the course of the game or something else. Total focus so that we are good again in the next game.

“We stay calm, we have always responded and show that we are ready for what awaits us and that must continue.”
