Leverkusen’s Terrier out for the season after rupturing Achilles

Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Martin Terrier will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the Bundesliga win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Terrier, who joined Leverkusen from Rennes last July, was replaced by Piero Hincapie after just eight minutes on Saturday after turning awkwardly.

The Frenchman has scored two goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for Xabi Alonso's side this season, while also registering two assists.

Terrier joins fellow striker Victor Boniface on the sidelines, with Alonso fearing the worst before the news was confirmed by the club on Sunday.

“It doesn't look good,” Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso revealed in a post-match interview.

“Tests will be done tomorrow, but the feeling is not good at the moment. The way he looked back is typical of an Achilles injury. It's a shame for Martin.”

Granit Xhaka also sympathized with his teammate, echoing his head coach's thoughts shortly after his full-time appearance at the BayArena.

“I really hope it's not what we think and what he felt. It would be a slap in the face for the club and us players. It's something that will keep you out for a while,” Xhaka added.

Florian Wirtz, who scored twice and recorded an assist in the win over Mönchengladbach, continued his good form against them in the Bundesliga.

Wirtz has nine goals (four goals, five assists) in nine games against Mönchengladbach, more than he has against a single opponent in the top flight.

The result saw Leverkusen keep the pressure on leaders Bayern Munich, with Wirtz insisting he dreamed of retaining the Bundesliga crown this season.

“We are in the middle of a title fight again – you can dream a bit,” Wirtz told Sky Germany. “I like playing against Gladbach.”
