Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes that there was a “feeling of fear” when Darwin Nunez performed to take his penalty against Paris Saint-Germain.
Nunez saw his efforts saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma before Curtis Jones suffered the same fate, while PSG was perfect from 12 Yards to ensure the progress to the quarter -finals of the Champions League. The Reds were beaten 1-0 in the night after the first half of Ousmane Dembele.
The side of Arne Slot made a brave effort and checked more of the game than in the victory on the French side less than a week ago. But it turned out not to be enough, because punishments were needed to separate two even associated sides.
Warnock claims that there was a lack of trust when Darwin performed to take the second penalty from the club. “You had that feeling when Darwin Nunez walked to the ball,” he said. “A sense of fear of the fans of Liverpool.”
The ex-Blackburn defender believes that Darwin and Jones also had a hard time on the field after they had been introduced from the bank. “Darwin Nunez had no influence on the game and Curtis Jones was bad when he came up,” added Warnock.
“Cody Gakpo didn't look fit. It looked like a wasted replacement from Liverpool.”
Alan Shearer meanwhile praised the man who stood in their own way, Donnarumma. “In that guy there, Gianluigi Donnarumma, who on his right when he became really low from Curtis Jones, it was absolutely sensational,” he offered.
“They surrender a game in this competition, because they are a really good side.”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk called on his disappointed teammates to keep their heads high prior to another chance of success this weekend. The Reds then follow to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final in Wembley.
“It's part of football,” he said after the game. “I said to the boys:” You can be disappointed because we are out of the competition, but Chin Up. “Now we are getting ready for the next challenge on the weekend that is a nice one.
“I think we were pretty good today, and you want to go as far as possible, but we knew that if we pulled PSG, it would be very difficult. We saw in Paris when we struggled, but we won, and today we saw a very good Liverpool side, but we are out of the competition.
“Today from the first second and then extra time, when fatigue enters into force for both parties, it becomes more open, but especially regular time, we have shown a very good game. We have been able to talk about the game for centuries, but we are out of the competition, that is reality.”
