Marc Guehi is eyeing a move to Liverpool, with Crystal Palace wanting one of the Reds' best players in return.
The defender has seen his stock rise over the past 12 months, excelling for England at the European Championship and being the subject of several bids from Newcastle last summer. The Eagles opted to resist as they remained determined to hold on to their centre-back.
When Guehi eventually leaves Selhurst Park, he wants to join a Champions League team and Liverpool would be his preferred destination. His contract is set to expire, which could limit the fee Palace can demand if he leaves the capital.
However, the Eagles are keeping tabs on Liverpool youngster Ben Doak, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough. He continues to impress and Palace's hierarchy could include the Scot in any deal involving Guehi's departure.
Their main target at the moment is Rayan Cherki, who plays for Lyon. They want to bring him in next month, but if they don't, they will likely push harder for Doak, The Sun reports. Port of Middlesbrough will hope to keep him at the Riverside Stadium, but that will depend on whether they are promoted.
The 19-year-old wants to return and play for Liverpool but could move to a new Premier League home if his route to the first team is blocked. The Reds have made good use of their academy in recent years, but are well stocked when it comes to attacking resources.
Their search for Guehi will likely be influenced by what happens with Virgil van Dijk. The defender has entered the final six months of his contract but is tipped to extend his stay at Anfield. Besides him, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are options.
Palace itself saw Michael Olise, one of their leaders, leave for Bayern Munich this summer. Oliver Glasner has some impressive individuals in his ranks, such as Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton, and the Eagles will want to fend off interest in them.
After Guehi stayed at the club this summer, he said: “Congratulations to our owners because they did not give in. Thank you to Marc, he was always open with me. All rumors did not affect his performance. He always told me know that he is not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and that is always the most important thing for me.”
