Liverpool launch investigation into Anfield roof leak during Man United game

Liverpool are launching an investigation into the cause of roof leaks at Anfield during Sunday's 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Images circulated on social media of water pouring from the top of both the Main Stand and the Anfield Road Stand.

The leaks at the latter occurred near the contingent of traveling Manchester United supporters, who have experienced their own problems with leaking roofs at Old Trafford. They were filmed poking fun at their rivals by singing “Anfield is falling down”.

Both stands were the most recent redevelopments of the stadium. The Main Stand opened in 2016 and the Anfield Road Stand in early 2024, following a £100 million redevelopment that saw Anfield's capacity increase to over 60,000.

Liverpool are now investigating why water came through the building, with club officials confident a full investigation will be completed before the next home match – Saturday's FA Cup third round against Accrington Stanley.

One possible theory for the cause of the problem was the heavy snow that hit Merseyside on Saturday evening, causing the UK Met Office to issue an amber weather warning.

Concerns about fan safety prompted two meetings of the city's Safety Advisory Group to be held on Sunday morning to determine whether the match should go ahead. In the end, the match went as planned.

Anfield has previously experienced heavy rain and no leaks, so the investigation is aimed at discovering why this was a problem on this occasion.

Club officials have suggested that water created by the large amount of snow on the roofs of the stands that melted in the hours before kick-off may have been the cause of the problem, while heavy rainfall also fell during the match .

The Athletic has approached Liverpool for comment.
