Liverpool -legend Phil Thompson went on the field in a moving tribute to Liverpool Vooruit Diogo Jota at the first Anfield match since his tragic death.
Thompson was accompanied by Athletic Bilbao President Jon Uriarte prior to the friendly double header of their club on Monday evening when the few wreaths laid in memory of Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
The duo wore the wreaths in the midst of Applaus and Jota songs from the packaged Anfield -mixed, before she put them in front of the goal of the head end.
The tribute marks the first return of the Reds to their house since Jota's sad death at the beginning of July.
A similar tribute of a Liverpool legend was also performed on each of the last two Liverpool games, during their Asia tour for the season.
Sir Kenny Dalglish put a wreath in Hong Kong prior to their competition with AC Milan, while Ian Rush took responsibility in the structure of their friendly with Yokohama in Japan.
Jota and his brother rode in North Spain last month when an eruption reportedly ensured that the Portuguese star lost control of his Lamborghini and turned off the road.
The incident left the football world in mourning with tribute that flowed in for the 28-year-old from all over the world.
Liverpool has since ended up his number 20 shirt in the club in honor of him.
There were worries for the game that the game and the sincere tribute could not continue at all.
Parts of Anfield had to be evacuated less than an hour before the kick-off due to an A-emergent alarm.
A club statement was: “Shortly before 3:50 pm there was a false alarm in the main standard of Anfield, which led to supporters in that area of the stadium to be temporarily evacuated.”
In the end there was no delay to start and the plans continued uninterruptedly.
Fans did not have to wait long as soon as the game started, with younger Rio Ngumoha who opened the score within two minutes with a beautiful curly attack.
Darwin Nunez would double their benefits minutes later, making a heart symbol in honor of the celebration.
Nunez Eerde previously honored former teammate Jota by simulating his characteristic celebration after scoring in a friendly last month.
