Harvey Elliott still has to start a Premier League match under Arne Slot in Liverpool, and former Reds -midfielder Joe Cole believes that time might be good to leave Anfield
Harvey Elliot was told by ex-liverpool-wing player Joe Cole that there are “options” for him to leave the club this summer to get regular football.
At the end of this weekend, Liverpool could celebrate their Premier League victory, with a win or even a draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon that secured the title for them.
This would mark the second championship of the Reds in five years, but it would be their first time to celebrate fans since 1990, because their 2020 triumph was observed behind closed doors because of the COVID pandemia.
Although all Liverpool players eagerly anticipate the occasion, it has a special meaning for those who grew up as club fans, such as Harvey Elliott.
The attacking midfielder made two performances in his debut season in Anfield after a transfer from Fulham, who ended with the Jurgen Klopp team who won the Premier League effortlessly. However, after a successful loan in Blackburn Rovers it was that he became a fixture in the first team.
Elliott has found it more challenging to get playing time this season after the arrival of Arne Slot as the successor to Klopp. In fact, he has not yet started with a competition match among the Dutchman, but he has made important contributions from the bank-in particular the first-long-winning goal of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
There has been speculation around the long-term place of Elliott in Liverpool, and former Reds star Cole thinks that the star will not be short of choices if he or the club think it is time to continue.
In conversation with Paddy Power, Cole praised both Elliott and Curtis Jones for their talent and potential to become international regulars. Yet he noted that the power of Liverpool in midfield could limit their chances.
He said: “I would like to see Harvey play regularly. There are options for him and if he becomes available, I think a lot of teams will be interested in him.
“He is a fantastic player and I would like to see Liverpool leaving Liverpool to play football regularly because he is old enough and did his time. I would just like to see him play because he is such a fantastic talented player.”
Elliott, who collected 53 performances last season under Klopp in Liverpool, opened about his frustration about the not enough to get enough playing time after winning a victory in Paris in March.
Think about his situation, Elliott said: “I am still young, it's hard to understand in my head. I have played almost 150 games for Liverpool and I feel that I am very experienced in terms of that aspect.
“So there are times in the season where I get angry, I am frustrated because I want to play, but at the same time I have to respect the situation, I have to respect the decisions of the manager.
“Some games I need, some games that I am not. That's just how football is. That's why I feel that we are in the position that we are so far in this season because of his decisions.”
Elliott then spoke about his discussions with lock and added: “We had conversations. Very honest conversations and open conversations. It is up to me to put the work in it, to be honest and show him everything he told me.
“I try to work on it, I try to improve and I try to get into this team. At the same time I have the feeling that I can't be too angry and frustrated, because the team is honestly is great. It's a team game.
“It's just not about me. I just have to make sure that I am in the right mind frame to stand up and influence the game.”
