Former Liverpool -star John Aldridge believes that the club will have had conversations about Caoimhin Kelleher who leaves Anfield in the summer.
Kelleher has played 17 times this season, eight of those trips in the Premier League, with first-cheese keeper Alisson missing a number of games due to injury. He also made a striking appearance against Real Madrid in the Champions League, which saved a Kylian Mbappe penalty in a 2-0 win.
The Irish International has not been in the competition since December, when his fault Liverpool cost two points against Newcastle. With Giorgi Mhamardashvili who would participate from Valencia in the summer, he was able to find his options even more limited.
The side of Arne Slot has a long order that controls the contract situations that influence Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Although Kelleher would have a considerable compensation if he leaves, instead of leaving for a free transfer, Aldridge believes that a Kelleher exit will have been considered by those in Anfield.
“I think the fact that Liverpool will pay a lot of money for Giorgi Mhamardashvili means that Alisson or Caoimhin Kelleher will leave the club,” Aldridge told Betano. “It must be something that was discussed between the directors and Arne Slot.
“Kelleher is too good to be a number two at every club and he knows that too. I am die-hard liverpool, so I would always stay in the club if I could, but you also have to see it from the player's perspective.
“I think, unfortunately for Liverpool, that he will probably leave the club this summer. If he wants to play week in, week, he has to leave Anfield and find somewhere else.”
Kelleher was important last summer, but Liverpool broke a number of bids for the 26-year-old. However, because his contract expires in 2026, this may be the year that he leaves.
“I have made clear in recent years, I want to be a number 1 and week in, play out week,” said the keeper in September. “The club has made the decision to get another keeper. Looking from the outside it seems that they have made a decision to go in a different direction.
“My ambition has always been clear in the last few seasons that I want to be a number 1, play week out for week. Sometimes it looks like it is 100 percent my decision, but sometimes it's not always in my hands.”
