Liverpool Signings Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong were teammates at Bayer Leverkusen and had an angry discussion on the couch last season – but they have clarified that everything was not the way it seemed
Liverpool stars Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong have corrected the record on what was considered a fiery argument earlier this year. The duo left both Bayer Leverkusen for Anfield this summer and arrived for a combined reimbursement of approximately £ 150 million.
They brought their close friendship to MerseSide, who formed themselves as teammates in Germany during their five seasons. But a moment in March of this year seemed to show a heated confrontation between the couple.
Leverkusen was 3-0 with a broadcast against Rivals Bayern Munich in the dying phases of their Champions League Last-16 First-Pije collision. Star players Wirtz and Frimpong were both replaced and sat on the couch when TV cameras both angry them during a conversation.
None of the players stopped their frustration when they seemed to complain about the performance on their part, while many viewers and even some publications believed that the couple had a very public spit.
But now that Liverpool players, the teammates have clarified that they did not argue, but in fact once with something that had gone wrong on the field. They were shown the clip in a new video for the official YouTube channel of Liverpool, entitled 'Bezzies', during the current tour through the Reds through Asia.
Wirtz immediately pointed out: “This is wrong! People are wrong”, after they had seen the images popping up. Frimpong said: “We were actually on the same side. I saw this on social media.”
The German playmaker then intervened: “They were wrong. We were against Bayern in the Champions League and then the head starts [getting frustrated]. “
Wirtz, 22 and Frimpong, 24, also spoke about how they first became good friends at Leverkusen. Frimpong started with saying: “The first time I met Flo was in the dressing room of Bayer Leverkusen. Of course I knew who he was before to view him.
“When he sat next to me, we just started talking. He was the first to feel at ease. Then I clearly started going to his house, we started to relax and we became friends.”
Wirtz added: “It's easy for me [to be friends] Because Jeremie is a man that everyone loves. He is funny and always in a good mood, so of course I am one of the guys who like him. “
The duo both became integral players for the Bundesliga side after the appointment of Xabi Alonso as head coach of Leverkusen in October 2022. They played the leading role when Alonso led the club to their first Bundesliga title in 2023/24, which they walked without a single defeat.
Leverkusen also took the DFB-Pokal and was on track to secure an unprecedented unbeaten Treble until they suffer a 3-0 defeat in the Europa League final against Atalanta. They experienced a more difficult season in the past term, and ended up 13 points behind Bayern in the competition while she became trophy.
