Liverpool told Salah saga could cost them title as January transfer proposed

Liverpool have been warned that Mo Salah's contract saga could ultimately cost them the Premier League title, especially if they sell him in January.

The 32-year-old Salah's contract expires at the end of this season. He scored thirteen goals in fourteen league games to put Liverpool seven points ahead of the table. The Egyptian announced last month that he has not yet been offered a new contract, meaning he is on course to become a free agent in June 2025.

Liverpool would lose one of their all-time greats for nothing, but the Reds could make the bold decision to sell him in the January transfer window to recoup a fee. That's a theory put forward by former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen, who believes a 'huge offer' from Saudi Arabia would give Liverpool a decision.

The Reds previously rejected a £150 million bid from Saudi giants Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023. But now there is a real threat that Salah will leave on a free transfer, just like teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Mohamed Salah is unique. You can look at his age, but also at his current contribution, his injury record, how much he wants to play,” Meulensteen told OLBG. “He is so important for Liverpool and without him they will fall. You can look at what he has achieved, but it is about what he is achieving at the moment and what we can expect in the near future.”

“What is his current contribution? Brilliant. If you were to take him out of the team it would be a huge setback. He scores, he assists and I think the club needs to find common ground.”

“Liverpool would be foolish not to get that sorted out and that needs to happen sooner rather than later. It would remove all speculation and uncertainty at a time when they are winning and sitting at the top of the table. If things turn sour, that could happen too .” pushing things over the edge in the wrong direction, the same goes for Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“What I would say about Salah is that his future could be the reason they don't win the title. If there is a real offer, maybe a huge offer from Saudi Arabia, in January, and Liverpool decide they don't want to lose .” him for free – if he walks out the door it could cost them the title.”

Salah was hoping to continue his blistering form in the Merseyside derby at Everton but the match was postponed due to safety concerns during Storm Darragh. The Reds play Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday.
