Liverpool told to ‘keep an eye on’ Aston Villa star after superb Man City performance

Liverpool are being urged to make a move for Jhon Duran following the Aston Villa striker's impressive start to the season.

Duran scored the opening goal in victory against struggling champions Manchester City on Saturday, taking the tally to 12 goals in all competitions this season. And the Colombian forward now appears to be usurping Ollie Watkins as Unai Emery's first choice.

Liverpool have seen Darwin Nunez heavily criticized all season, although his long wait for a goal ended in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against basement team Southampton on Wednesday night, while Diogo Jota has had a number of injury problems.

Former midfielder Didi Hamann therefore believes the Reds hierarchy should consider a move for a player Villa was desperate to leave this summer after he was bizarrely asked if he might be interested in Harry Kane.

“To be honest, [Kane] seems happy at Bayern Munich and I don't think Munich wants to sell him,” Hamann told Boyle Sports. “I don't think that will happen and Liverpool have never been the biggest spenders so that's unlikely.

And Hamann said Liverpool should focus on Duran instead. “Jhon Duran is a brilliant player and the way he plays always helps to have a player with physical presence up front,” he said. “He created space up front and made a huge impact for Villa [against City] I definitely think Liverpool should keep an eye on him.”

Duran, 21, had posed on social media during the summer transfer window hinting at a move to West Ham, but the deal fell through as the Irons could not raise enough money.

But he has won back the affection of Villa fans with a series of impressive cameos from the bench. Fourteen of his Premier League appearances to date have come off the bench, but he has now started three times and also contributed three goals in a half-dozen Champions League appearances.
