Liverpool transfer news: Real Madrid admit Arnold defeat as Barcelona eye move

Liverpool have two weeks left if they want to do business in January.

The Reds currently top the Premier League and are the clear favorites to win the title in May. But before that, Arne Slot's team could consider a purchase to get them over the line.

Even if not, Liverpool may need some additions to replace some of their current stars. Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah will all be out of contract next summer.

Merseyside chiefs have tried to extend the trio's stay at the club, but so far they have had no luck. That said, take a look at the latest transfer news and rumours:

After Trent Alexander-Arnold failed to sign a new contract with Liverpool, he was pursued by Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are keen to sign him this summer but have tried to sign him six months earlier.

All their approaches have been rejected by Liverpool so far and it appears they are ready to admit defeat. According to Revelo, the Spanish giants believe it is 'practically impossible' to sign him this month due to Liverpool's position.

Instead, they have resigned themselves to signing him in the summer once his contract on Merseyside expires. Madrid's top brass have apparently given their approval for a transfer to be put on hold and it remains to be seen whether they will opt for an alternative right-back in the short term amid Dani Carvajal's injury problems.

While it looks like Alexander-Arnold will be heading to Spain sooner or later, one of his current teammates could follow him. According to Antena2, Barcelona are ready to make a bid for Luis Diaz this summer.

It is suggested that they could put down €70m as they are long-time admirers of the Colombian winger. The 28-year-old Diaz still has two and a half years left on his contract with Liverpool.

It is suggested that he wants an improved contract to remain at Anfield for the foreseeable future. Italian side AC Milan have also been linked with him in the past.

Liverpool have been told Mohamed Salah is 'irreplaceable' as the row over his contract continues. That is the view of former striker Emile Heskey, who said: “It is difficult to say who will be the biggest defeat for Liverpool in the summer.

“If you lose Mohamed Salah, how much will his replacement cost? Can you replace it at all? Who publishes numbers like Salah? Absolutely no one.

“I understand his age, but that is not really reflected in his performance. He doesn't stop running in his matches and his stats speak for themselves. He is irreplaceable.”
