Liverpool is said to be 'very interested' in signing Borussia Dortmund Center-back Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk.
The German international could be set to leave Dortmund in the summer alongside a series of teammates if they miss European football.
It has been a disaster season for last season's Champions League finalists, who are in the Bundesliga 10th, but Schlotterbeck has been praised as a leadership figure.
Liverpool would be willing to pay around £ 42 million for the 25-year-old, whose contract expires in 2027, according to the report from Bild.
That would make him the second most expensive defender ever, behind the £ 75 million that they paid for Van Dijk in 2018.
The Reds must plan the future with Van Dijk's contract in the summer, with Joe Gomez also seen as a possible candidate to leave.
Schlotterbeck, who is at 6ft 3in, is located at Dortmund in his third season and is one of the backup captains behind the former Liverpool-Man Emre Can.
It is believed that he earns around £ 4.2 million a year, such as per capology, which makes him in line with the mid-level earners of Liverpool.
After he started his career at SC Freiburg, he spent a season on loan at Union Berlin before switching to the second largest club in Germany.
He has already been appointed twice in the Bundesliga team of the season, in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
