Espérance kept their knock -out phase hope alive at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 ™ by beating the Los Angeles Football Club in Geodis Park in Nashville.
Espérance, now with three points, are right with Chelsea FC, but is in third place on target difference. CR Flamengo has qualified for the knockout phase.
Lafc had most of the possession in the first half and sometimes looked dangerous, but they had goals from Denis Bouanga and David Martinez cried back. The game remained scoreless during the break after the teams had combined six shots, the least for half in the tournament.
In the 49th minute Espérance seemed to have won a penalty after Youcef Belaili entered the box in contact with Bouanga. After a var evaluation, however, the call was destroyed due to a lack of contact and Gelderde yellow card for simulation.
The Tunisian side eventually broke through in the 70th minute. Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida made a long run and was expropriated by Igor Jesus, but Belaili hit the loose ball in the box and defeated Hugo Lloris with a hard, low shot in the nearby pole.
Both parties play their last group game on Tuesday 24 June. Lafc is confronted with Flamengo at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, while Espérance meets Chelsea on Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
