Luis Enrique spoke with reporters before the final of the club World Cup against Chelsea and assessed both the competition and the state of his team.
“Nobody really knows how the other team comes into the game. That's not what it's all about. The final is near and we feel great. It has been a historic season and we want to finish it in the best possible way,” he said.
The tournament
“I have seen a phenomenal attitude of all players. In terms of efficiency, the year was incredible. If I had to judge the entire season – extraordinarily.”
Fabián
“The praise that Fabián receives could be said about every PSG player. That is the key to this team – everyone gives everything. He struggled two years ago, but now he cannot be enlarged.”
Personal touch
“I got more things good in times when I didn't win – and I was crucified. I still make many mistakes. But the result is the result.”
The star of the tournament?
“I, a star? Not even in the neighborhood. I enjoy what I do. I especially enjoy the difficult moments. If things are not going well, I feel more life. Winning is great because it makes people happy, but I always feel more at ease when I was criticized than when I am praised.”
The season of your life?
“That may be. But there is still a final to win. As soon as we have won it, we can talk. We have to give everything. Just look at City – they win everything, lose ten games and suddenly they are under fire. Pep is still the best coach in the world – and they crucify him.”
Is Chelsea just a formality?
“Only people who don't know Chelsea would say that. They have a coach that I really admire. It is a complete team. This is anything but a formality. We are going into the competition with 100 percent.”
No superstars
“You need a team with eleven stars, not just one. That is football – and that is our goal. Not only eleven, but thirteen, fifteen … The real star should be the team. That is what our club stands for. We are going to lose again, that's for sure. We certainly want stars – but in the service of the team.”
Praise
“The best praise we have received comes from fellow players or coaches who say they like to watch PSG games. That is our goal: to give football fans – and sports fans in general – something exciting to see.”
Balloon d'Or for coaches?
“I don't believe in individual prizes in general, so even less for coaches. The team comes first. Dembélé has been the best in goals, assists and working speed this season. That is clear to me.”
