Luis Enrique urges PSG to stay sharp in hunt for silverware

Paris Saint-Germain could win Ligue 1 if they beat Saint-Etienne and other results go their way, and Luis Enrique wants to maintain their momentum.

Unbelved PSG have a 19-point lead in second place Marseille with eight games to go, leaving them on the edge of their fourth straight Ligue 1 title.

PSG has to beat Saint-Etienne on Saturday and hope that Marseille loses, while Monaco and Nice, the teams in the third and fourth, also fall points.

If that scenario takes place, PSG provides their 11th league title since 2012-13 and their second straight crown under Luis Enrique.

PSG has not lost any of their 26 games in Ligue 1 2024-25 (W21 D5) and could only be the third side to remain unbeaten in each of their first 27 meetings of a top season, after Nantes in 1994-95 (32) and PSG itself in 2015-16 (27).

“We are never champions until it is mathematically a foregone conclusion. But we are the best team in Ligue 1,” Luis Enrique told reporters on Friday.

“We are going to use this moment so that these eight games can be used for more global objectives.”

The Spaniard, who previously led Barcelona to a Treble by winning Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey titles in 2015, has the chance to repeat the performance this year.

PSG Face Face Dunkerque in the Coupe de France Semi-Final on Tuesday and have a two-legged Champions League Quarte final against Aston Villa, with the first stage that takes place at home on April 9 before traveling to Villa Park on 15 April.

“We have to be ready for the two or three months of competition,” he added.

PSG reached the semi -final of the Champions League last season before lost to Borussia Dortmund, but wants to keep their title of Coupe de France after he had defeated Lyon last season.

Luis Enrique said that PSG was fully motivated prior to their visit to relegation-threatened Saint-Etienne, who are in the table 17th, a point under Le Havre, who played more a game.

Saint-Etienne closed their first victory since January, when they were at the bottom of Montpellier at Montpellier on 16 March, but the game was abandoned after Thuisfans threw torches on the field and set a part of a stand.

PSG stands on a 27-game undefeated series against Saint-Etienne in all competitions (D6 L21). Only twice in their history PSG once enjoyed a longer run (Angers – 30 since 1976) and Brest (32 since 1985).

“We play against a historic French club. There is a very powerful atmosphere in the stadium,” said Luis Enrique.

“We love this atmosphere of football and passionate people. It is very motivating for us. I hope there are no problems.”
