Luka Modric: Real Madrid midfielder becomes Swansea City co-owner

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has become a member of Swansea City as an investor and co-owner, has announced the Championship Club.

The 39-year-old captain of Croatia spent the last 13 seasons with Real Madrid and helped them to win six Champions League titles after a period of four years in Tottenham earlier in his distinguished career.

Swansea could not reveal how much Modric, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2018, had invested, but he expressed excitement by the opportunity to use his knowledge to help the Welsh outfit.

Modric said: “This is an exciting chance. Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fan base and the ambition to compete at the highest level.

“Play at the highest level, I believe I can offer my experience to the club.

“My goal is to support the growth of the club in a positive way and to help build an exciting future.”

The most important focus of Modric At the moment is on the Champions League quarter final second stage of Real Madrid Thuis on Wednesday from Arsenal, but his contract in Bernabeu will end at the end of this season.

His decision to invest in a football club follows teammates Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior who do the same at Ligue 2 Outfit Caen and Portuguese side FC Alverca, respectively.

Swansea is currently owned by Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris and Jason Cohen, a group that took the majority owned by Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan last November.

“I am excited that Luka came on board as an investor and co-owner,” said Swansea chief Executive Tom Gorringe.

“There is no better role model in the game for our players, from the academy to the first team.

“His approval of our ambition and willingness to support our journey will play an important role if we want to continue to improve our results on and outside the field.

“In our conversations he has demonstrated his passion for the club, his knowledge of how we perform and a real passion to help us improve.

“I'm really looking forward to working with him better to help us move forward.”

The most recent bills of Swansea, released last month, showed a loss before taxes of £ 15.2 million for the financial year ending on June 2024.

A joint statement from the Swansea board was: “We are delighted that Luka joined our ownership group.

“It was clear from our first discussions that there was a coordination with our visions and that Luka would be a real asset to our group.

“We want to thank Luka and his team for their support through this process, and we look forward to welcome him to the Swansea.com stadium to meet you all as quickly as possible.”
