Andre Onana did little to hit the claims of Nemanja Matic about one of the worst keepers in Manchester United, while a few errors helped Lyon to a 2-2 draw in their Europa League quarterfinals first stage.
Onana was engaged in a word war with the former man UTD player in the structure of the game, but the Nu-Lyon midfielder worsened with two weak saves that led directly to Lyon's objectives.
The keeper had apparently unintentionally started the very public row by claiming that man utd was the better of the two parties, before Matic responded during a press conference on Wednesday: “If you are one of the worst 'goalkeepers in the history of Manchester United, you must care.”
The first mistake by Onana saw him Palm Thiago Almada's curly free kick in the upper corner before goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee – the last three minutes of the time – had taken the heat of the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
But was worse to come. His ninth mistake that led to a goal in a man Utd-shirt was perhaps his most painful, that the effort of Georges Mikautadze at Rayan Cherki's feet to let Lyon level with less than 30 seconds injury time.
It means that Man Utd Lyon now has to beat in the return bone in seven days to make progress, but it could have been so different.
Yoro's first goal for the club, a glimpse into the rising effort of Manuel Ugarte at rest, was the least that they earned on the interval before replacement Zirkzee gave the perfect reaction to be fell with a powerful header of Bruno Fernandes' cross for what the winner seemed to be.
But after the last mistake by Onana in an increasingly difficult personal season, the heat is firmly back on the man Utd No. 1 for the cost of his team a valuable victory in the first legs.
Should Onana be fallen after the last blunder?
After the game, Man Utd -boss Ruben Amorim refused to be attracted to whether he would consider dropping Onana on the back of his last mistakes.
“It's important [for Andre Onana] To concentrate on the next game in the Premier League and then think of the second stage, “he told TNT Sports.
“Against Lyon, when a player makes a mistake, the whole team makes a mistake.”
He added, when it was immediately asked if Onana should be fallen: “We will continue to do the same things. Training, seeing the game, trying to choose the best XI to win every game.”
No 2 Altay Bayindir made an impression in his last three games against Rangers and FCSB in the Europa League, as well as with his double penalty -saving heroic deeds against Arsenal in the FA Cup.
But he wounded a large part of the intervening time -out and only returned to the bank for the defeat in Nottingham Forest on April 1.
“It is a decision that you should look at,” said former Man Utd assistant Mike Phelan on Soccer Special. “Is there a no 2 goalkeeper at United able to play the role of the rest of the season? You can't keep hiding those mistakes.”
