Maguire backs Amorim to succeed but admits Man Utd transition will be difficult

Harry Maguire has backed Ruben Amorim to turn around Manchester United's dismal season, while acknowledging there are major stylistic differences between the Portuguese coach and his predecessor Erik ten Hag.

United are 14th in the league and have lost half of their 10 games under Amorim since he took over in mid-November, including three successive defeats in the festive period ahead of their match against Newcastle United on Monday.

The Portuguese has inherited a side under Ten Hag that is used to a transitional, counter-attacking style, while Amorim has emphasized possession and a back three system during his time at Sporting CP.

Maguire is backing Amorim to turn things around, but is aware that a transition period will be difficult for the players as the results are already visible.

“The problem is with the managers and the styles. It's not like they've come in and have the same style,” Maguire told Sky Sports.

The transition period will therefore be difficult. We all have great confidence in the manager and his technical staff.

“I'm sure things will change. He knows exactly what he has to do to get this club back.

“He came in and did everything he had to do. He's really demanding.”

The defender also admits that United's players have not even discussed future goals due to the poor state of the club.

He said: “We're just doing everything we can to climb the table.

“We can't really set a target at the moment because we are nowhere near good enough and nowhere near where we want to be in the rankings.

“It's really disappointing what we've done so far. Everyone knows that. We know it's not good enough for this club.”
