Makelele reveals Terry STOLE the losing penalty off ‘best’ taker during 2008 UCL

Claude Makelele opened the notorious Penalty Shootout Blunder by John Terry during the last defeat of Chelsea Champions League against Manchester United.

Terry took what the decisive fine could have been at the end of a 1-1 draw in the very first final between two English clubs, but slid on the run-up and hit the post to send the shooting in a sudden death.

Nicolas Anelka continued with Miss Chelsea's seventh spot kick to unite a domestic and European double, but Terry's Miss is still seen as the decisive and iconic moment in Moscow's Luzhniki stadium.

Now Makelele has revealed that Terry was initially not intended to take the spot – kick, but the fifth penalty of Chelsea's best taker – Salomon Kalou achieved.

Speaking at Rio Ferdinand, said Makelele: 'It's [Kalou’s] Turn, but Johnny took [his] ball.'

Ferdinand asked: “So John Terry took the penalty instead of Kalou to win the game?”

Brokerele confirmed and explained that Terry took the punishment in 'a good way', which implied that there was no confrontation between the ex-blues captain and Kalou.

But he explained that Terry's eagerness to be the most important man ultimately is why the former defender has only one Champions League title to his name instead of two.

Brokerele added: 'Exactly, but it is in a good way. It is in a good way. But as I see it, Johnny [doesn’t] Now have two champions competitions. Because Kalou was the best punishment [taker] At that time at Chelsea. '

Ferdinand then asked brokerele why he did not intervene at the time and Terry said that he allowed Kalou instead to take the penalty.

Brokerele explained: 'I didn't know [that Kalou was Chelsea’s best penalty taker] See you later. Because in the game, if I knew this, I would of course say: “No John, [let him take the penalty]. “

'But of course he is also my teammate, isn't it? He [Terry] would cry [if he was told not to take the penalty] . Because of all the players, we have lost this game. '

Ferdinand continued brokerele further to the impact of Didier Drogba's resignation in the game; The legendary striker was sent in extra time for violent – with the affair level at 1-1 – after beating Nemanja Vidic.

Brokerele said: 'Sometimes it is difficult to talk about this. I am one [forward] person. Didier, I tell him. Didier, you can't do this. Red Card, we are dead. We may win with you before we go to a penalty [shootout].

'Because we knew if we were going to punish you, you [Man United] Have the better players for taking penalties.

Ferdinand replied: 'Yes, yes. Oh, yes, he would have taken a penalty. Damn hell. It's true, right? I didn't think about that. '

Last year, Terry revealed on the podcast for Front that it was 'probably the worst moment in my football career'.

He added: 'I am still not over it today. I don't think I'll be that someday. It is interesting because as a player you have so many highlights, but it is the lows that stay with you longer.

'That night we lost back to the hotel and the manager asked us all to have a drink, but I stayed in my room because I couldn't undergo the boys. Eventually I went downstairs and had a beer with the rest of the group.

'I just remember that I was on the 25th floor in my hotel room, looked over Moscow and wondered:' Then why did it start to rain then, why did I slip?

'The hardest thing for me was that three days later we had a friendly for England against the US near Wembley and we pulled 1-1. I scored a header from outside the box. If I could exchange two goals in my career, it would be those two. '

He also told Sky earlier in the months after the Miss: 'Every morning I wake up, that's the first thing I think about. I'm still so desperate about it.

“But I am a big man with a big character and it is now up to me to deal with it.”

For the 2008-09 season, he added: “I'm definitely looking forward to the new season, so that I can get rid of that bitter disappointment for the club, and especially for me.”

Despite his heartache in 2008, Terry later won a Champions League title later along the line.

Although he was suspended for the final, Terry took a winner medal home when Chelsea Bayern Munich overcame to win the European Elite Club competition in 2012.
