Man City 2 Wydad 0: Phil Foden back to brilliant best in Club World Cup but England pal Rico Lewis rages at red card

Manchester City's own 'Philly' boy chose Pennsylvania to start the long way back to his best.

The slump of Phil Foden in form was one of the most disappointing aspects of what was a season to forget for the men of Pep Guardiola.

Yet after just 111 seconds he scored to give them a perfect start to their club World Cup campaign in the house of the Philadelphia Eagles.

And later he created a goal for Jeremy Doku to ensure that the English club got their defense of the trophy a perfect start.

His teammate of England, Rico Lewis, did not enjoy his visit to the city of Brotherly Love-it from a red card for kicking Samuel Obeng in the face.

Wydad AC, based on Casablanca, has won the title in Morocco 22 times – although it was three years ago that they last picked up silverware.

And they were expected to be ideal opponents for a city team who wanted to leave behind in a new era in the last 12 months.

It cost Pep Guardiola's side – which included new signing sessions Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki – only 111 seconds to go in front.

Keeper Mehdi Benabid could only walk the cross of Savinho in the path of Phil Foden who did not rumble while he was bustling the loose ball in the bottom corner.

It was a first goal in 20 games for Club and Country for Foden – who fell far below his usual standards last season.

To their honor, falling behind so early, did not hit the confidence of the Moroccans who clearly still had their chances.

Nothing more than Thembinkosi Lorch, who decided to try his luck from half the line and had Edererson backwards to make a rescue.

Cassius Mailula forced the standard in the city captain a few minutes later in action and the men of Guardiola certainly did not all have it in their own way.

Every chance of a shock result, however, ended just before the break when Foden drove over a corner from the right.

The defenders of Wydad were eliminated when Jeremy Doku stood in front of his husband to put at home in the rear pole.

The Belgian could have added another after the break, but was refused by Benabid when he could have had the square for Foden or Cherki.

With temperatures that pushed 30 degrees into the open air stage, City was happy to slow down the game and look it out.

Guardiola also chose to make a series of subs – one of whom Erling Handand skied a late chance to make three.

But the game viewed by a healthy crowd of almost 37500- ended on a sour note for the men of Guardiola.

Lewis received a straight red card for catching Obeng in the face with a follow -up – and despite a VAR check the decision.
