Manchester City have completed the signing of wonderkid Vitor Reis for £30million as Pep Guardiola's rebuild gathers pace.
The reigning champions have struggled this season and are already twelve points behind Liverpool in the race for the title. But they are determined to force themselves back into battle, with Reis representing a significant capture.
The teenager has completed a £30million transfer from Brazilian side Palmeiras, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. After the move was confirmed, Reis said: “I am excited to join Manchester City, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“Everyone has seen the great performances of recent seasons and I want to make my mark in our quest for more trophies. Working with Pep Guardiola is something that every young player wants to do, and I know he can help me develop into the best player I can be.
“City also have a lot of experience working with Brazilian footballers and bringing players like Ederson and Savinho into the squad will be a big help for me.”
Football director Txiki Berigirstain added: “Vitor Reis is one of the most promising young defenders in the world and we are pleased to have brought him here. In his short time in senior football in Brazil he has shown that he has the ability to go very far in the game and we know that working with Pep and our coaches will help get the best out of him.
“He is excellent on the ball and excellent in the air – he has all the qualities needed to be one of the best. Vitor is still very young, but his quality is so high that we think he can help us now and for the long term.”
Reis is the second defensive addition City have made this month. They have also signed Uzbek international Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for £34m – with City planning an ambitious £250m rebuild.
It looks like the expensive additions won't end there either. Omar Marmoush is putting the finishing touches on a £68m move from German side Eintracht Frankfurt, while Juventus stars Andrea Cambiaso and Douglas Luiz have also been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium before the end of the month.
If these are all completed – along with the arrival of River Plate wonderkid Claudio Echeverri – the City team will look completely different heading into the second half of the season. And we haven't even mentioned Erling Haaland's record nine-and-a-half-year contract.
In terms of exits, captain Kyle Walker is closing in on a move away from City. He is set to join AC Milan after being flown into Italy to undergo medical treatment ahead of an initial loan deal with a view to making a permanent move.
