Man City had to ‘accelerate’ squad overhaul, says chief Soriano

Ferran Soriano, Chef of Manchester City, revealed that the club “accelerated” their recruitment drive after a slow start of last summer's window.

The lack of arrivals has contributed to their bad start of their title defense, because a bad piece in November and December fell far behind leaders Liverpool.

Indeed, about those above months, Pep Guardiola's side achieved only one win in 13 games in all competitions (D3 L9), with a revision of arrivals in January.

The citizens welcomed Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov in the middle season window for a reported cost of £ 180 million ($ 241.67 million).

City ended the Premier League season with an unbeaten run of 10 game, their longest of the season and the longest series without defeat on each side to end the 2024-25 campaign.

That culminated in a 2-0-way victory over Fulham, where he secured Champions League football and the opportunity to attract part of the best talent for the Etihad Stadium.

Prior to their club World Cup campaign Cityan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli welcomed for a reported £ 100 million ($ 134.26 million).

“We are very happy, I am happy with the work we did,” said CEO Soriano.

“This is part of the multi -year planning. Last summer we bought only one new player, but this year between winter and summer it will be eight new ones.

“It is part of the annual cycle, the renewal of the team. We have accelerated part of it and now we are very happy with the team we have.”

The club has no longer excluded potential arrivals in the window, while Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker are both linked to movements.

Kevin De Bruyne also mentioned time on his Stellaire Stint with the citizens and has since become at Napoli, with midfielder Kalvin Phillips the first team also wants to secure football.

“It's part of the game,” Soriano added. “We are looking for stability. The fact that PEP will be with us for 10 years shows that we are a stable club.

“But the team must be renewed. It is something that happens naturally.

“We have fantastic players such as Kevin De Bruyne who spent a decade with us. That is proof of his quality, but also our stability.”

The next for City is a collision with all Ain in Atlanta while they want to build on their 2-0 win over Wydad AC in their first group game of the competition.

The citizens have all won their matches at the Club World Cup (including all formats), in which opponents, 9-0, are outdated in those matches.

The only team that wins their first four Club World Cup matches is Bayern Munich (first five to MatchDay 1 in 2025). And Soriano insisted that Guardiola and his players focus on the trophy and the crown of world champions.

“We are very enthusiastic about it,” he said. I think it's something that was very necessary, football is a worldwide sport and we have to make it worldwide.

“I think it's a great initiative and we are very happy to be here. The ambition for city in every competition is to win it. That is the status of the club.

“It is clear that it is not possible to always win, so we want to go as far as we can. But the ambition of Manchester City is always to win.”
