Man City: LaLiga files complaint to EU Commission alleging Premier League champions have breached EU Competition Law

Laliga President Javier Tebas says that the Spanish League has filed a legal complaint to the EU committee, claiming that Manchester City has violated the EU commissioning legislation.

Tebas said that the complaint was submitted in 2023 and is linked to the regulations of the foreign subsidies.

The Regulation concerns foreign subsidies granted by non-EU States to companies involved in economic activities within the internal market.

Laliga submitted a complaint on the basis of the fact that Man City received foreign grants from the United Arab Emirates (VAE), allowing the club to improve its competitive position and cause significant disruptions at various national and EU markets.

Tebas said: “The only thing they do is to think about how they can avoid the rules and regulations.

“We reported this to the European Union with facts and figures. Why because it is an English team that is not part of the EU, but they have commercial activities in Europe.

“It is really important that all clubs are subject to transparency rules and administration and real competition in the financial and sporting side of their company.”

Laliga states that the club receives resources under non-market conditions that disrupt various closely related markets, so that the club of top players and coaches can sign that go much further than feasible under normal market conditions and to guarantee sponsorship income at levels that are not in accordance with the fair market value.

Laliga says that this improves the performance of Man City on the field, while this limits the capacity of his rival.

It is understood that meetings are held, but Laliga is waiting for a decision and/or further progress of the European Commission.

Man City says that Tebas has a long history of attacking the club and refused to comment.

But they strongly refute the allegations and point to their accounts as proof of no misconduct that is a matter of public report.

Sky Sports News has contacted the EU committee for comment.

The legal complaint from Laliga is divorced and not related to the 115 charges that MAN City has confronted with alleged infringements of the financial regulations of the Premier League. Man City denied all the charges.
