Man City sack Taylor five days before Women’s League Cup final

Manchester City has fired coach Gareth Taylor only five days before they met Chelsea in the final of the Women's League Cup, with Nick Cushing taking over on an interim basis.

City has experienced a decline since he missed the Super League of the ladies' Super League last season, which were fourth in the table with six more games.

The city is 12 points on drift of running leaders Chelsea, while Manchester United and Arsenal are also above them and both hold a game in their hands.

On Sunday, Taylor supervised a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup quarterfinals, but that was his last game at the helm after City chose to make a change.

“Manchester City is proud to compete at the top of the WSL and on his excellent record of qualification for European competition,” said director Charlotte O'Neill.

“Unfortunately, the results this season have not reached this high standard so far.

“With six more matches of the WSL campaign left, we believe that a change in management will breathe new life to the qualification for the Women's Champions League of 2025-26.

“We would like to inform our thanks to Gareth of all his efforts during his many years in the city.

“Our FA Cup and League Cup triumphs remain special moments in the history of this football club. We wish him the very best for the future.”

Taylor led City to Glory in the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup two years later, also supervision of two second place in the WSL in 2020-21 and 2023-24.

City has returned to their former coach Cushing, who led the team between 2013 and 2020 and delivered the only WSL crown of the club in 2016, which also won the FA Cup in 2017 and two competition cups in 2014 and 2016.

He will try to win the last trophy for the third time on Saturday, when City Face Sonia Bompastor's Chelsea meets in Pride Park.

That will be the first of four games against the blues before the end of this month, with one match in the WSL and two more in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
