Man City, Spurs & Villa have UCL & UEL registration dilemma for January signings

After the joy of welcoming several new signing sessions during the transfer window of January, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are now confronted with a headache when it comes to their winter signal.

That is because, according to UEFA rules, clubs that play in Europe can register only a maximum of three new players in their knock -out stage team from their competition phase selection -although there are some exceptions.

And they don't have to decide for long which, with the deadline to register those players on Thursday 6 February at midnight.

That is a problem for those three teams, especially the city of Pep Guardiola – who were the largest expenditure of the Premier League with four new permanent additions, up to an amount of £ 176.1 million.

Villa is also affected by this, with five newcomers in January – including three loan signs. One of them was Marcus Rashford, perhaps the most controversial movement in the transfer window.

UEFA rules also have an influence on Spurs, which have made three January signing sessions -but their situation is further damaged by an injury crisis and a lack of players in their team in their team.

What are the rules?

Well, let's clear the boring rules for the road. In September, clubs that participated in Europe submitted a registration list for the competitive phases of their respective competitions. The registration consists of two lists. List A and list B.

List B here has no influence on Man City, Spurs or Villa, but if you are interested, it mainly consists of youth players.

Players in this list were 21 years or younger at the start of the season and were registered with the club for three consecutive, uninterrupted years from the age of 15. And there are no restrictions on how many of these players you can have, or when you can register them.

But when it comes to a list of A – that is where the most important players are. No club can have more than 25 players on list A during the season – and at least two must be keepers. Moreover, eight of those 25 players must be 'locally trained'.

What does that mean? At least four players must have been in the club's books between the ages of 15 and 21 for three years. The same competition.

If you do not suffice that quota, your team size is cut. For example, if you are two 'locally trained' players short, then you can only have 23 players in your list a team instead of 25.

We know, this will be very complicated. But stay with us because that 'locally trained' bit is important, especially when it comes to traces.

The most important crux is that clubs are only allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players after completing the competition phase and before the start of the knockout phase. There are some exceptions where more new players can be registered.

The first is for teams whose domestic season starts and ends in the same calendar year. Dinamo Zagreb, for example, because the Croatian competition starts in August and ends in December.

The other is like a club selling a large amount of players before the knockout phase. UEFA only allows four new players to be registered if more than five players have left in the team for the group stage, and five additions if more than seven have left.

Still with us? Let's see what this all means.

How does this man influence City, Spurs and Villa?

Let's start with Manchester City. They have signed five new players in the first team to register in January and you do not need maths at A-level to know that five is not going in three.

Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush were all signed in the past month, while City also signed Claudio Echeverri from River Plate – later this month. They should all go to list A.

But not enough city players from List A left the club to take into account all five that are registered. So Guardiola has some thought to do. Which two will he leave only to Champions League matches?

Now the situation of Aston Villa is different. They signed five players in January, but crucial also left five players from their list A trait the club at the same time – Jhon Duran, Emiliano Buendia, Kostas Nedeljkovic, Jaden Philogene and Diego Carlos.

That means that according to the above rules they can register four players of Rashford, Donyell Malen, Andres Garcia, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi. However, one will have to miss.

Tottenham Hotspur is now more complicated. They did not come to meet at the start of the season at the start of the season, because they have only mentioned two 'locally trained' players in Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman. They needed at least four.

As a result, because they were two players short, they called a team of only 23 players for the Europa League League phase. That meant that Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon were not mentioned in their competition phase team.

Just like Man City, Spurs can only register three new players in their knockout stage team and they could choose their three January signs sessions in Kevin Danso, Antonin Kinsky and Mathys Tel. But they should replace the current players in the Spurs team, because their current schedule of 23 players is full.

Radu Dragusin is probably not registered given his long -term injury, the place of Fraser Forster is threatened by Kinsky, since Austin and Whiteman have to remain grown from their own soil. Furthermore, a third recognized player in the first team may have to make way to sign No. 3.

But with so many injuries on the back, do they also have to choose someone like Spence, who has been impressed by a backup in recent weeks? If so, misses or another Spurs player of the first team that misses our or one or more of their signing sessions in January in the final rounds of Europa League.

Does this affect their Premier League registration?

Not really. There is no limit to how many players you can register or not register before the deadline after January, so you adhere to the rules.

A maximum of 25 players can be mentioned in the Premier League Squad list, and eight of those players must be grown away from home, under the same self -grown rules as UEFA.

Moreover, players under 21 do not have to be in that team of 25 players, they are automatically registered on a different list of list B with UEFA.

Clubs must submit their team list after the transfer star has been closed in January, normally in the week after the market is closed.

But that is enough regulations for one day, don't you think?
