Man City’s £68m new signing says farewell to supporters ahead of transfer

Omar Marmoush said goodbye to Frankfurt fans ahead of his move to Manchester City and applauded them on the pitch after being excluded from their 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Marmoush is the Bundesliga's second-highest scorer this season after Harry Kane, and his 15 goals have lifted Frankfurt to third in the table.

Frankfurt will be without his services after agreeing a £68million deal with City, who asked the German club not to play as a forward against Dortmund.

City got their wish after Marmoush watched from the stands as Hugo Ekitike and Oscar Hojlund scored the goals, although the Egypt international took to the field at full-time.

He was cheered on by his teammates as they appeared to congratulate him on making such a big move to Pep Guardiola's reigning Premier League champions.

Marmoush appeared emotional and had his head in his hands as the Frankfurt players hugged him in front of the home support. The player then pumped his chest and raised his arms to the fans to finally say goodbye before leaving.

Earlier in the day, Frankfurt had confirmed that Marmoush had been left out of Dortmund's squad as they made light of negotiations with City.

The club said: “Eintracht Frankfurt are currently in discussions with another club regarding the transfer of Omar Marmoush. As a result, he has not been included in the squad today.”

It turns out Frankfurt didn't need him as they secured a crucial win that consolidated their position in the top four and put them two points behind Leverkusen in second place.

City hoped to sign Marmoush for £40 million, but Frankfurt insisted they needed a higher transfer fee as it was mid-season and they needed to find a replacement.

Marmoush's arrival comes after Pep Guardiola previously admitted it was a mistake not to replace Julian Alvarez last summer. The deal could take City's January spending to more than £160m as they also look to complete deals for centre-backs Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.
