Man Utd appoint new transfer chief despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s plans to axe 200 staff

Manchester United has appointed Christopher Vivell as director of recruitment on a full -time basis after the German had signed a short -term agreement last year.

The 38-year-old has now signed a multi-year contract with Old Trafford, according to the Athletic, who will see him lead that the club will lead “global recruitment operation, reconnaissance structure and emerging talent”.

Vivell, who previously worked at Chelsea and Red Bull Leipzig, will report directly to technical director Jason Wilcox – who has now taken more responsibility after the output of sports director than Ashworth.

United makes major changes to the structure of the club under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and recruitment is one of the areas where staff will be released, the report says, after the announcement that 200 employees would be hired.

Vivell's position was always intended to eventually become permanent, says it, with its presence in the club that offers more “clarity” for the structure in the midst of the continuous turbulence behind the scenes.

He will probably play a key role in United's summer spending and the identification of players to strengthen Ruben Amorim's team. The Portuguese boss has already confirmed that the club will be forced to sell before they can buy in the midst of their difficult financial position.

Vivell will be charged with organizing a new scouting setup after a round cut in the department. The club initially had around 140 scouts in a bloated system that now seems to be more refined. Vivell is said to have played a crucial role last year in signing the young midfielder Sekou Kone and will now be expected to lead United on the transfer market with a refined budget.

It is said that Ratcliffe has made it clear that signing sessions will have a major impact on the financial success of the club, so there will be pressure on Vivell to ensure that quality names are set in that delivery and the bank do not break.

It comes after CEO Omar Berrada has announced a series of new job reductions that he said they were needed to keep the club on the right track for a successful future. He said: “We are starting a wide series of measures that the club will transform and renew.

“We have lost money in the last five consecutive years. This cannot continue. Our two most important priorities such as Club provide success on the field for our fans and improving our facilities. We cannot invest in these objectives if we constantly lose money.

“At the end of this process we will have a more skinny, agile and financially sustainable football club, while we will continue to offer our valuable commercial partners of world class. And improved facilities for fans, while they meet UEFA and Premier League regulations. “
