Man Utd close on £30m defender as transfer talks progress ahead of deadline

Manchester United continues to have conversations with Lecce while they conclude a £ 30 million deal for Patrick Dorgu.

The Red Devils continue to discuss the Italian side this week, while they want to make their first major addition of the January transfer window. Lecce President Saverio Sticchi Damiani had made it clear that the club did not want to sell, but Dorgu wants the clubs to reach an agreement.

United needs new recruits and with Ruben Amorim who plays a 3-4-3 system, the wing-back position has become vital and the team is currently lacking in players who can naturally play in that role.

Dorgu can help fill the void with the Premier League giants that come closer to the asking price of Lecce. The Daily Mail understands that they want £ 33 million – that united close to matching with add -ons.

If the Red Devils are not successful in their pursuit of Dorgu, they are ready to turn to Benfica's Alvaro Fernandez and to activate his £ 15 million purchasing back clause, which they have in their favor until 2026. Dorgu's contract with the Serie A-side will expire in 2029, but he would like to make a switch to Manchester.

Those at Old Trafford originally had PSG's Nuno Mendes on their radar, but he would prove to be too expensive that Amorim had to work under a budget. Mendes had played as a wing-back under Amorim when they were both in Sporting Lisbon.

Milos Kerkez van Bournemouth was another in consideration, but would again not be sold cheaply by the cherries and United tried to avoid a month -long saga who could have seen them end with empty hands.

January so far on the red half of Manchester has been dominated by potential departure, instead of arrivals. The club has announced that they are financially on the outskirts when it comes to PSR rules and they are willing to listen to offers for even their appreciated assets.

Alejandro Garnacho is one of those who can still leave before the window closes with Chelsea and Napoli who are interested. The Argentinian has been under Amorim in and out of the team with his attitude that is mentioned as a concern, but he would still give a considerable fee.
