Street artist Akse P19, behind the work, noted that Scholesy won with a “considerable margin”.

He added: “What is even more remarkable is that some fans of the Man City participated in the mood and Koos Koos, who speaks volumes about the impact he has had.”

Scholes, 50, won 11 Premier League titles with United and played 66 times for England before he retired in 2013.

Akse added: “This mural serves as a permanent tribute to his incredible career and the pride he brings to Middleton.”

Scholes was born in Salford and moved with his family to the Langey Estate in Middleton when he was about 18 months old.

He said earlier: “As far as I'm concerned, I am Middleton through and through.
