Man Utd news: Christian Eriksen’s future decided as Ruben Amorim makes admission
New boss Ruben Amorim has started work at Manchester United, with a first win in the Premier League as his next goal.
The Portuguese coach picked up his first win on Thursday as United came from behind to beat Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in a chaotic Europa League match. Now his side welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Sunday, hoping to improve on last weekend's frustrating 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.
But Amorim is not just focusing on the events on the pitch, as the January transfer window is just around the corner. The Red Devils have spent heavily under their previous managers since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and this is unlikely to change during Amorim's tenure. But spending is the priority for now.
Here's a round-up of the latest news from Old Trafford.
Eriksen's future decision made
Manchester United have decided not to offer midfielder Christian Eriksen a new contract, as Ruben Amorim sees no future for the 32-year-old after this season. Danish international Eriksen arrived on a free transfer from Brentford in 2022, his first club since suffering cardiac arrest last summer.
After being a mainstay during Erik ten Hag's first season, the Dane lost his place as a regular starter last season and is not part of Amorim's long-term plans. Eriksen's contract expires on June 30 next year and has been tipped to join Scottish giants Celtic, where Danish team-mate Kasper Schmeichel now plies his trade.
Why Everton blocked Branthwaite's move
Everton boss Sean Dyche has explained the real reason why Jarrad Branthwaite will wear blue instead of red at Old Trafford on Sunday. The highly rated centre-back was the subject of two lucrative bids from Manchester United during the summer transfer window, but Everton made the 'brave' decision to reject both.
“Not just Jarrad, there are certainly other players here that we could have sold,” Dyche told reporters. “I said, 'look, it's more rewarding to keep these players because if you sell too many, we're diluting too much'. We're diluting every year, so if we dilute over and over again, eventually it goes wrong.
Amorim describes the conversations with the therapist
Ruben Amorim says he is 'not ashamed' to reveal he saw a therapist before entering coaching, insisting he can cope with the pressures of being Manchester United manager. “I think it will change my life, it won't change me. Everyone tells me: this will change me. This won't change me,” Amorim vowed.
“Of course, if something happens, I will be frustrated for a while, but I know I will recover. But I believe we will succeed. I feel the confidence of the people, but to tell you the truth, I am relax because no matter what happens, I'll be fine to say I've had a therapist, a psychologist.”
