Arsenal are joined by Manchester United in the race to sign in-demand Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo.
The 25-year-old Mbeumo is having an impressive season with the Bees. He has scored thirteen times in twenty Premier League games, beating his previous best goal tally of nine. His form has filled the void left by Brentford talisman Ivan Toney, who joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli last summer.
After Arsenal were linked with his services earlier this week, Daily Star Sport now reports that United are considering making a £40 million bid for the Frenchman. It is claimed that Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim likes Mbeumo's versatility in a front three and appreciates his work ethic.
Newcastle have also been tagged as interested, with Eddie Howe said to be a fan. But any potential admirers will have to be patient as Brentford will spend the entire month of January rejecting offers for Mbeumo and the player himself will not force a move after spending six seasons with the west Londoners.
Mbeumo was signed by French club Troyes in 2019 for a club record £5.9 million. He is currently said to earn £50,000 a week, which United would be willing to double, although any transfer would be subject to a sale at Old Trafford, with virtually all of Amorim's squad available for transfer as part of a sell-out .
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has already warned clubs about a bid in January. Asked about the chances of Mbeumo leaving, Frank replied: “In January? I would say good luck. We love Bryan. He loves playing here. He has had a fantastic season, so nothing will happen.”
That was before Mbeumo boosted his stock even further with a goal against Arsenal on New Year's Day. Only Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Liverpool striker Mo Salah have scored more goals this Premier League season than the 25-year-old, who has a contract with the Bees until June 2026.
However, in May last year, Mbeumo made it clear that he wants to 'play for the best clubs'. Speaking to L'Equipe, he explained: “I spent five years at Brentford, at a club that allowed me to grow and reach a milestone, but yes, I would like to play in the biggest leagues, at the best clubs. It's tempting to see some big clubs interested in me. We'll see.
