Manchester United have increased their interest in striker Viktor Gyokeres as a scout looked on as he played for Sweden in the Nations League.
United have long been linked with a move for Gyokeres, who has scored 66 goals in 68 appearances for Sporting since joining from Coventry in 2023. And rumors of a possible move to Old Trafford have only increased since manager Ruben Amorim left Sporting to take charge. United.
And according to a report from the Sun, United sent scout Sergio Souza to Stockholm to watch Gyokeres in action for Sweden. The 26-year-old impressed throughout the match, scoring Sweden's opener as they defeated Slovakia 2–1.
The report states that European giants Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also considering summer moves for the striker. Both Amorim and Gyokeres have been asked in recent weeks about a possible reunion at Old Trafford.
“If I start making jokes about the situation in Gyokeres, I will get into trouble,” Amorim told Portuguese newspaper A Bola. “This is my city, this is my country, so I will respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else.”
Gyokeres, meanwhile, told Fotbollskanaal: “He [Amorim] It probably has some attackers there already, so we'll see. No, he hasn't [asked me to join him]. It's fun, but I don't attach any importance to it because it's talk and nothing concrete.
“It is very sad that he is leaving, but of course we understand his decision. Of course he meant a lot [to me] considering that he gave me that opportunity and that he allowed me to develop so much. Now we look forward to working with the new coach.”
Amorim has ruled out a January swoop for his Sporting players, but United are expected to back him next summer. “I'm not going to sign anyone from Sporting in January. That's what I said,” he admitted earlier this month.
“In the summer I don't know what I'm going to do. The main point is to hold on until the summer. Secondly, you can see that the Sporting players are great players. Let's see what will happen.”
