Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham says he “wouldn't be surprised” if his former club made “two big signings in January”.
United are in thirteenth place in the Premier League after a 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford. Manager Ruben Amorim hinted at the need for reinforcements after the match when he admitted his side may be the 'worst team' in the club's history.
And Sheringham has named Alexander Isak, who is closely linked to rivals Arsenal, as a player United would like to sign. “I wouldn't be surprised to see two big signings at Manchester United in January,” Sheringham told BoyleSports.
“I think United need to rebuild but it is difficult to get big names and good players in the January window. I think it is a time to work in the background and look for players who can start next season. I would like to see big signings.” but it will be difficult.
“United just need an overall upgrade. They have good players, but not top players. People chose combined squads with Liverpool last week, without a single United player in them. That's unheard of in the last 30 years.” thinks.”
“When top players became available, United would go out and break the bank to get them. That is not the case at the moment. There is a huge rebuilding job to do.” And Sheringham believes Isak would be a “perfect signing” for United, with only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland scoring more Premier League goals than the Newcastle star this season.
“Manchester United is still a huge draw for any player and playing for the club is still a highlight of anyone's career,” said Sheringham. “Would Alexander Isak consider joining United if an offer came in? Without a doubt.
“I'm not saying a deal will get done but he would be the perfect signing for United. He can lead the way and score goals and could be a statement for the new regime. He has a lot of confidence at the moment and can do that doing.” set a good example.”
United will have to let players go before they can afford to sign anyone this month, but the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have all been heavily linked with exits that will free up some money.
