Man Utd transfer news: Amorim adds new target to wishlist amid Onana stance
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret this summer.
The 27-year-old is currently first choice in Naples, but his contract expires at the end of the season. The 27-year-old has retained his status under Antonio Conte despite his uncertain future, but has helped the Italian side reach the top of the table.
Meret has seven clean sheets to his name, but has not been able to enjoy a breakthrough in his talks with Napoli. It means that several clubs are keeping their fingers on the pulse, including Manchester, but Inter Milan is also on the hunt, reports Sky in Germany.
Ruben Amorim has been told he is working on a limited budget, although that situation could change by the summer, but plans are still being made to bring in quality staff without spending a fortune.
Andre Onana is currently the main man in goal at Old Trafford, with Altay Bayindir coming on as a substitute. Onana was taken over from Serie A in Erik ten Hag's second season and came over from Inter Milan.
He has endured a difficult debut season but has become a reliable player for Manchester City and it is clear the Red Devils are not looking for anyone to replace him. That would likely mean Meret would come in as a backup option.
Bayindir has been incredibly patient but could slip further down the pecking order if Meret eventually moves to the Premier League giants.
Amorim likely wants a goalkeeper who can play at the back, which was the inspiration for Ten Hag's pursuit of Onana. The Cameroon shot-stopper is confident that the club will adapt to his system. He said: “A different system, but my players, my teammates, we are all pragmatic. I think everyone here is capable of playing in any system, so I don't think this will be a problem for us. We have big players, so they will go a step further.”
This year, Onana has more clean sheets (six) in England's top flight than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League. Matz Sels of Nottingham Forest comes closest with five.
