DANNY MURPHY: Three things Thomas Tuchel MUST do to bring World Cup glory – including a big decision on key player

Our expert looks at some of the key areas he needs to tackle to bring World Cup glory.

KANE OR HIGH PRESS – YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH

Thomas Tuchel has a big decision to make about Harry Kane. He is our best goalscorer, but will almost be 33 at the World Cup.

My instinct is that he doesn't want to dump the captain – when Tuchel was manager of Bayern Munich he signed him from Tottenham – but that would mean toning down the Jurgen Klopp style he is known for. Kane is not the man for that. His strengths are vision, touch and finishing.

The other option, which worked for Lee Carsley in Greece last week, is to start with Ollie Watkins and bring in Kane later when there is more space.

At the European Championship, England struggled to apply pressure when Kane was in the lead.

It's a fascinating problem, but Tuchel needs to do something about it. England have a manager who is able to get the maximum number of players at his disposal, even if it means adapting his own style.

With boundless energy and three at the back, he won the Champions League at Chelsea. And at PSG he made use of the talents of Kylian Mbappé and Neymar; they would never be turned into defensive geniuses.

Tuchel has some great players to work with, but none better than Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham.

He is absolutely essential to our prospects of becoming world champions. His versatility allows him to excel in a number of positions, but that could be a hindrance if he changes from game to game.

Bellingham impressed as a number 10 at the European Championships, but he is built to play box-to-box, using his athleticism and technical skills to make things happen. Like Steven Gerrard used to do.

For that reason he should start deeper, closer to Declan Rice and let Cole Palmer or Phil Foden support the striker – Kane or Watkins.

Bellingham is brilliant at picking up plays in midfield and getting forward at the right times.

Tuchel should now give Bellingham a defined role, so when we get to the World Cup, his partnership with Rice will be second nature.

Bellingham is still only 21 and he's going to get better.

CLUB ENGLAND, BACK THREE AND A SURPRISING MEMORIES

A successful World Cup requires Tuchel to maintain the good atmosphere that Gareth Southgate developed from Russia 2018.

Representing your country became something the players enjoyed. Friendships were made and you didn't get the massive withdrawals that Carsley has had to deal with.

Tuchel will want to establish one system. There is not enough time at international level for players to switch from one system to another.

Personally, I don't think three players at the back are advisable because it means sacrificing an attacker where we have so much talent.

Whether left-back or left-back, England want a left-footer in that position. We suffered with the euro because we didn't have one.

I bet Ben Chilwell is thrilled with the appointment with Tuchel.

They won the Champions League together and although Chilwell is not wanted at Chelsea now, this is an incentive for him to make a move in January and force his way back into the English reckoning. He's certainly good enough.
