Manchester City 3-4 Arsenal: Blackstenius decides seven-goal WSL thriller

Arsenal jumped in Manchester City and became second in the ladies Super League table with an exciting 4-3 victory over the Gareth Taylor team in the Joie Stadium.

Renee SLESERS suffered her first defeat as head coach of Arsenal against running WSL leaders Chelsea last week, while City hoped to respond after a chaotic week in which Stillaway wing player Chloe Kelly came on loan.

Arsenal could hardly have asked a better start, because they went 2-0 within eight minutes. Thanks to a loose game by Laia Aleixandri, Mariona Caldentey left home after 42 seconds at home, and then Lotte Wubben-Moy on his way of a deep free kick.

Mary Fowler's header halved the backlog in the 20th minute, after which Arsenal -legend Vivianne Miedema asked an equalizer against her former club in the second half.

However, Frida Maanum ran a little more than a minute later on Caldentey's Throughball to restore Arsenal's benefit to 3-2.

The turns went on when Fowler brought the scores again with a 55th minute of penalty, but Stina Blackstenius had the last word when she went home from the center of Beth Mead.

The victory takes Arsenal second in the table, seven points behind Chelsea, after he played an extra game.

City is fourth, two points on drift from both the Gunners and Manchester United, with their hope for Champions League qualification that takes a blow.

Data Debrief: Blackstenius maintains Stadshoodoo

City must be sick of seeing Blackstenius. She has now scored the winning goal in each of the last three victories of Arsenal over the citizens in the WSL.

This is only the second time that Arsenal has scored four goals in City in the WSL, earlier during their very first trip there in August 2014.
