Costa, 25, is seen as the perfect replacement for the Brazilian, who suffers from a different lies problem – it has plagued him throughout the year – and is being fought again this season to play again.
Costa, now the number 1 of Portugal, has a buy -out clause of £ 63 million in his contract with Porto – and that has two more seasons. For that price it can be too rich for the city.
But Costa fits perfectly in the profile of Pep Guardiola, with the same kind of passing range that Niererson has made such an important player at Etihad. And incoming director of Football Hugo Viana has a strong relationship with the agent of Costa, Jorge Mendes.
As such, there is a conviction in Manchester that a transfer costs of £ 50 million can be sufficient to agree a deal. United are also great admirers – but do not have the finances to activate the buy -out clause or challenge their rivals in the race for the signature of Costa.
Costa has won two Portuguese titles with Porto after he arrived at the Club's Academy as an 11-year-old.
There is no doubt that Niererson has been crucial for the triumphs of Guardiola in the city. He won six Premier League titles and three Golden Gloves Awards and made a series of excellent rescues when City Inter Milan defeated in the Champions League final to conquer the Treble in 2023.
The Brazilian had a strong interest in the Saudi Pro League last summer, but chose to sit. He may get a similar interest again this year.
He produced his fourth assist of the season last weekend when his long-distance pass set a goal for James McATee in the 5-2 victory over Crystal Palace. It gives him more assists than any other keeper in the history of the Premier League.
But he hoped later after he had drawn a groin muscle that might end his campaign.
