Manchester United target Premier League star as Ruben Amorim eyes first transfer

Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United, with current number 1 Andre Onana under increasing pressure.

Onana joined from Inter Milan in 2023 on a £47m contract, reuniting the 28-year-old with his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. However, Ten Hag has now been fired and replaced by Ruben Amorim and Onana is said to be dissatisfied with life in Manchester.

According to the Daily Star, Onana was already restless before Ten Hag was fired, but since Amorim's takeover, things have only gotten worse. As a result, United are looking for a replacement and Verbruggen is believed to be high on their options list.

Verbruggen has established himself as the number 1 for both Brighton and the Netherlands in recent years, having moved to the south coast from Anderlecht that same summer. United signed Onana.

The 22-year-old has three years left on his current contract and it is claimed that United would have to spend around £30 million to get their man. However, a deal is unlikely to be completed next month as United are likely to wait until next summer.

Both Onana and backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir have made high-profile mistakes in recent weeks and Verbruggen is not the only stopper United have been linked with. According to reports, Royal Antwerp's Zenne Lammens is also on the club's radar.

Lammens has impressed for Antwerp so far this season and has also attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund. United are said to have sent scouts to watch the Belgian Under-21 international in action.

Onana has previously admitted he questioned whether he had made the right choice by joining United during his first season at the club. “It was really difficult [to start off with] but it is the first time I have faced such a situation,” he said in May.

“Now I know the league, I know the people, I know the country, I know Manchester. When I look back now I just smile because it was a big lesson for me. But at the beginning I thought: 'Wow, I Did I make the right choice?'

“But I am absolutely 100 percent sure that I made the right choice because Manchester United is the bigger club in this country, it is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I don't think my teammates are happy with the situation in which we live.” face because I know them, they are all winners and everyone wants to win.”
