Manuel Akanji ruled out of City’s second leg against Real Madrid

The defender of Manchester City will also miss Premier League matches against Newcastle and Liverpool because of muscle injury, while the Spanish side hopes to have Antonio Rüdeliger back.

Manchester City will be without Manuel Akanji for the second stage of their Champions League play-off against Real Madrid after the defender was excluded for a few weeks with a muscular injury.

Akanji sustained the injury in the first half of the first stage in the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, when City lost 3-2, giving them only an external chance to reach the last 16.

There has been no official announcement from the club with regard to the seriousness of Akanji's injury – nor that of Jack Grealis for a few weeks.

City certainly does not expect that the 29-year-old defender of Switzerland will return for one of their next three games: Premier League Home Games against Newcastle United and Liverpool both sides of the away games with Real on the Bernabéu on Wednesday.

Akanji started to feel the injury towards the end of the first half and was replaced by Rico Lewis at the start of the second half. When asked for the Akanji and Grealish Injuries after the game, the city manager, Pep Guardiola said: “I don't know yet, but if they have gone out for muscular reasons, they might not be [fit for the second leg]. “
